2021 "Out of Line Vineyard" Estate Blend
Reviews
93 from James Suckling
This Bordeaux-style red blend contains 25% each of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot for a chocolatey melange of black and blue fruit supported by moderate, velvety tannins. Both delicious and well structured.
Past vintage review: 95+ from Anthony Mueller with The Wine Advocate
Made from 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Petit Verdot and 25% Merlot, the 2020 Out of Line presents balanced and delightful aromatics with expressive red fruit exuding succulent juiciness. Its power grows on the palate, showcasing complexity and a lingering, pure finish. Unlike some other dense Red Mountain wines, this graceful red blend combines power and finesse, making it an excellent addition to any cellar. Its reasonable price makes it a compelling choice for those who appreciate bold yet elegant wines that beautifully capture the essence of Red Mountain. The wine aged for 23 months in a mix of French and Hungarian oak, 67% new. I’ll be adding some to my own personal cellar, and I recommend you do the same
Tasting notes
In a departure from our usual Cabernet Sauvignon focused Estate blend, the 2016 vintage of our Estate program features Cabernet Franc as the star. This lends our wine a lifted, floral aroma and spice on the palate, while the Malbec enhances the luxurious fruit quality, and the Merlot provides structure with its velvety tannins.
Vineyard
Red Mountain AVA 100%
Out of Line Estate Vineyard 100%
In 2005 we finished planting 10 acres of vineyard: 6 acres planted with 5 clones of Cabernet Sauvignon, 2½ acres planted with 4 clones of Merlot, and ½ acres of Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot – with all of the plant material certified to be free of diseases and pests. Our vineyard rows are canted eleven degrees off of north-south. This orientation more evenly balances the sun exposure on each side of the vine row, increasing the exposure on the east and decreasing it on the west.
Though our estate vineyard is called "Out of Line," it’s anything but—perfectly aligned with our vision and goals. Each vintage, we carefully select the best blend to showcase the true character of this unique site, capturing the essence of the land with every sip. This wine is a reflection of our passion for the vineyard and our commitment to crafting something exceptional.

Tim & Kelly Hightower
Tim and Kelly Hightower founded Hightower Cellars in 1997 in Woodinville, Washington with a simple philosophy: "Get the best grapes and don't screw them up." With their grape supply primarily coming from Red Mountain, the husband and wife co-winemaking team set out to make high quality wine, beginning with their first vintage: 221 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon.
Today Tim and Kelly aim to make wine that lets the powerful, concentrated fruit from Red Mountain speak for itself, producing wine with great character, that’s naturally beautiful and free from pretense. The result is a collection of well-balanced, nuanced wines that reveal something new and interesting each time you open a bottle. We like to think they’re wines with character through and through – in how they were made, how they taste, and in the connections they inspire.
